Inside Out: Our Favourite Lights

 In better by design

As well as providing sufficient light for the tasks and functions which take place, lighting has the power to change the mood in a room and even the perceived size of a space. Needless to say, it’s a key component of any interior design and we spend a lot of time thinking about it! Here are some current favourites from the team here at Outline Design.

Nicola’s choice: PH5 by Poul Henningsen

“Launched in 1958 as part of the PH series, I like the classic design and simple elegance of this light, as well as the soft quality of light it omits. The multiple layers of shades reflects the light making the pendant 100% glare free as well as completely concealing the light source itself. I think that the PH5 is extremely successful in encapsulating the designer’s philosophy of creating human-friendly lighting which creates an excellent atmosphere.”

Kate’s choice: Skygarden pendant by Marcel Wanders for FLOS

“This is my favourite light of all time! A playful fusion of classic & contemporary design. The glossy modern exterior of the pendant gives way to a moulded plaster interior reminiscent of the decorative mouldings of yesteryear. White interior/ exterior is a firm favourite however the gloss black & even the recessed options are equally spectacular.”

Nina’s choice: The Lariat Light by Apparatus

“I love how the design fuses together traditional, hand aged materials to create a contemporary, playful form that is reminiscent of jewellery. Interweaving the orbs with the beautifully detailed knot clamps, the lights can be customised to suit any ceiling height or room size. The soft glow created from the etched glass against the aged brass allows them to warm up a room’s colour palette.”

Suze’s choice: David Moreland Surface pendant light in wood

“This one is all about warmth – wood tones, soft organic shapes, glowing indirect light, playing with shadows. I think this is quite unique, and for that, and as a fan of wood, I love it. Plus It is by New Zealand’s own David Moreland – what more could you ask for? The Surface Pendant.”

Victoria’s choice: Tolomeo Mega Terra by Giancarlo Fassina and Michelle de Lucchi

“Giancarlo Fassina and Michelle de Lucchi are the designers of one of my favourite range of lights.  From the Artemide range the Tolomeo Mega Terra is a real classic that fits into any space.  Large in scale but minimalist in its design I just wish I had one of these.”

Alexandra’s choice: Fin pendant by Tim Webber

“It’s confident. It doesn’t need embellishment or extravagance because the proportions and composition are beautifully considered. It feels organic yet engineered, perhaps even a little other-worldly…which is a concept I am obsessed with at the moment. The light quality is soft and warm ensures the purpose is purely ambient. I like that it sits more at the art end of the lighting spectrum. I love that it’s local design, there is such a profound amount of talent right here in New Zealand and we don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics to support our own industry.”

James’s choice: Beat Lights by Tom Dixon

“This range of lights by UK designer Tom Dixon was inspired by brass cooking pots and traditional water vessels on the subcontinent. I really like the distinctive outlines of each version, and how they compliment each other when used together. The jet black exterior really enhances the brilliant brass inside and creates a stylish, modern light with echoes from the exotic east.”
